Toxicology in the 21st Century
The Irish Society of Toxicology, in conjunction with the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), partnered with the European project ShareBiotech, is proud to announce the conference entitled, "Toxicology in the 21st Century" on Thursday and Friday the 3rd and 4th November 2011.
This conference will hear from leading national and international scientists and policymakers on how the science of Toxicology is preparing to meet challenges now and in the coming decades. For more details on the itinery, please download the "Programme" acrobat file here.
Introduction
The Science of Toxicology is critical for the health and well being of the people on the island of Ireland and their environment. Our knowledge of how chemicals impact on living systems and the analytical capability to detect and identify these chemicals and their metabolites is rapidly expanding. Concomitant with these advances, the consumer on the island of Ireland is becoming increasingly informed and concerned about the impacts which chemicals have on their health and the health of their environment. As consumers, each one of us is reliant on the science of Toxicology to answer the basic question: will the product I use or consume cause harm to me, my children or the environment in which I live?
Companies require toxicology to ensure the products they bring to the market are safe for their intended user. It is estimated that toxicology drug failures cost pharmaceutical companies up to €1.5b pa and there is a growing recognition and acceptance that new more reliably predictive toxicology technologies must be developed. Policymakers and regulators are charged with keeping these risks to a minimum and, as such, are totally reliant on scientists who in turn must constantly augment their knowledge so they can fully address all potential toxicological risks including those associated with new technologies such as nanotechnology or with long term exposure to multiple chemicals.
Abstract Submission
Poster Abstracts will be accepted for the conference up to 17:00, Wednesday 26th October 2011. Please limit to a maximum of 300 words. Submission to and further details from Dr. Eileen Lane here.
