Welcome

”All things are poison and nothing is without poison, only the dose permits something not to be poisonous.“ - Paracelsus

Welcome to the Irish Society of Toxicology (IST) website. Please feel free to send us on any comments that you think may be helpful (see Contacts page).

The IST is a professional organisation of scientists from academia, government and industry, representing a broad cross-section of those involved in toxicology in Ireland. The IST is committed to creating a safer and healthier environment by advancing the science of toxicology. Interesting articles and information about toxicology can be read from here and we hope to also bring you monthly articles in our own Tox Topics section.

More information on the makeup and function of the Society can be found on the Constitution page and details of the current IST Committee can be found on the Committee page.

About Us

“Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on living systems, whether they be human, animal, plant or microbe.” - Dr. Thomas F. Schrager

The Society encourages and seeks to extend study and scientific interest in the field of toxicology. It makes available a number of grant awards under its Travel Grant Fund. This fund is available every 2 years to provide travel scholarships that are open to members of the Society and in particular, those undergraduate or postgraduate student members who may wish to present work at an international conference or to undertake educational activities or training overseas.

About Us graphic

Together with 4 other affiliated organisations (FOM; ISOM; OHNAI; OHSI, see below), the IST is involved with hosting the Annual Jack Eustace Lecture. Each organisation is invited to nominate a speaker every 5th year to lecture in the field of Occupational Health. In 2009, the IST nominated Prof. James Heffron (Biochemistry Department, UCC), with a talk entitled "In Vitro Toxicology of Chemical Mixtures". In 2010, the OHSI hosted a lecture by Dr. Martin Hogan, entitled "Biological Monitoring: Its role in 2010".

If you would like to contribute articles for publication by the IST please contact the IST Secretary or the Webmaster. We particularly encourage students of toxicology to become more involved in Science Communication and welcome any potential candidates who might wish to contribute comments, reviews and posters on a regular basis.

The logo is based upon the initial letter 'T' from the Crucifixion text in the Gospel of Matthew (ch. 27. v38), taken from the Book of Kells, Trinity College Dublin, MS 58, fol. 124. Permission was granted by the Board of Trinity College to the IST to use the logo as its emblem.
